Ajax Cape Town suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Maritzburg United in an Absa Premiership clash played at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday evening.

Andrea Fileccia and Brian Onyango on target for the Team of Choice who move up to eighth place on the log standings as a result.

Aubrey Funga’s strike proved too little too late for the visitors as the Urban Warriors winless run in 2017 continues.

Stanley Menzo’s troops were the better side in the opening stanza with Mark Mayambela unlucky to see his rasping shot wide on 25 minutes. But the visitors would find themselves a goal down at the break as Fileccia struck home five minutes before the interval.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 65th minute through Onyango. The Kenyan defender nodding home Deolin Mekoa’s corner-kick.

Ajax Cape Town conjured wave-after-wave of attack in the dying exchanges of the clash and were finally rewarded as Funga found the back of the net in the 85th minute. The Zambian making no mistake from close range.

His goal, though, would come too late as Maritzburg United held on for all three points on the night.
