Eric Cantona’s famous ‘when the seagulls follow the trawler’ line was reprised by PSG.

Someone at Paris Saint-Germain has a long memory, and a sense of humour.

Speaking this week to a YouTube channel dedicated to Manchester United as the 25th anniversary of his arrival at Old Trafford approached, Eric Cantona gave his opinion of PSG’s Javier Pastore.

“King Eric” stated his admiration for the Argentina international, who has made just four Ligue 1 starts this season, and aimed a characteristically barbed jibe at the six-time French champions for leaving such a talented player on the sidelines.

“He plays for Argentina, a great country, but he doesn’t play in Paris, a small club,” former Marseille player Cantona, who was born in the city on the French Riviera, said with a laugh. “But they have a lot of money, so they’re a big club.”

The response from PSG was swift and as powerful a blow as the Kung-Fu kick Cantona himself aimed at an abusive Crystal Palace fan in 1995.

“When the seagulls follow the trawler,” read the tweet, reprising Cantona’s famous address to the British media 22 years ago.

“It is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.”
